The Life-Changing “Engine of Determination”: How to Turn It On

For all of us, there are moments in life when everything feels stalled. As you look back on the earlier stages of your life - you can hear the word: “Determination” echoing in the background. You have “Echos of Accomplishment” in your life. You have a history of surmounting obstacles in your life. You have been the “go to person” for yourself and for others. However, for whatever reasons (and there can be a multitude of reasons) you have become distracted and everything feels stalled. You know what needs to be done. You’ve thought about it.You’ve talked about it. You may have even planned it. But you haven’t done it. Why? Because the “Engine of Determination” has not been turned on.
And here is the truth most people miss: Determination is not something you wait for. It is something you activate.
Determination Is Not Motivation
We often confuse determination with motivation.Motivation is emotional. It comes and goes. It is influenced by mood, energy, environment, and even the weather. Determination is different.
Determination is a decision. It is a cognitive commitment that says:“I will move forward—regardless.”
When determination is activated, action follows. Not perfectly. Not comfortably. But consistently.
The Engine Is Already Inside You
You do not need to find determination. You already have it. You have used it before:
• When you pushed through something difficult
• When you showed up despite resistance
• When you refused to quit.
The engine is there. But like any engine, it must be turned on.
How to Turn It On
1. Make a Non-Negotiable Decision; Determination begins with a line in the sand.
(Sidenote: Take a look at Vance Larson on LinkedIn or on Facebook. Vance Larson is a Life Coach and a strong advocate of the value of:: “non-negotiables”
Not “I’ll try”
Not “I’ll see how it goes.”
Not “I want”
But:“This is happening.”
“I will”
When you remove negotiation, you activate movement.
2. Act Before You Feel Ready:
Waiting to feel ready is one of the greatest traps. Action creates readiness. Not the other way around.Turn the key before the engine feels warm.
3. Shrink the Starting Point:
People fail not because they lack determination—but because they overwhelm it. Start small. Start now. One call. One paragraph. One motion.
Determination grows through execution.
4. Interrupt the Escape Routes: We all have them.
Distraction.
Avoidance.
Delay.
Determination requires containment. Limit the exits.Create an environment where forward is the easiest option.
5. Reinforce Identity:
Determination strengthens when it becomes part of who you are. Not:“I’m trying to be disciplined.”But:“I am someone who follows through.”Identity fuels consistency.
The AgeLoudly!* Reflection
Within the AgeLoudly framework, determination is about alignment. When you live in alignment with your purpose, your values, and your truth—determination becomes less of a struggle and more of a natural expression.
You stop asking:“Do I feel like doing this?”And you start declaring:“This is who I am.”
Final Thought:
The engine of determination does not roar to life on its own. It requires a conscious act.
A moment.
A decision.
A shift.
And once it is on—it will carry you further than motivation ever could.
Turn it on.
Age Loudly: Age Like It Matters… Because It Does.
_____
* AgeLoudly! a philosophy of thought and action that applies at every stage of life and development. AgeLoudly! is about living intentionally, visibly, and with purpose. It is the belief that each stage of life presents an opportunity to grow, to contribute, and to refine the person we are becoming. When individuals adopt an AgeLoudly! mindset, they begin to see their experiences — both successes and failures — as material for growth rather than evidence of limitation. This shift can be profoundly empowering. It reframes challenges as invitations, transitions as opportunities, and life itself as a process of continued expansion rather than decline.
