Aging: The Universal Connector

by

L.T. Force, Ph.D.                                                                                     Gerontologist

Introduction

There are very few experiences in life that every human being shares. We come from different backgrounds. We hold different beliefs.  We live in different places, love in different ways, and pursue different paths across our life journey

Yes, however, there is one undeniable, inescapable truth that binds us all together: We are all aging.

Aging is not selective.

Aging is not optional.

Aging is not a choice.

Aging is not reserved for the fortunate or the unfortunate.

Aging does not take into account, or influenced by, resources or wealth.

Aging is universal.

And in that universality lies one of the most powerful—and overlooked—connectors of the human experience.

Reflection

From the moment of conception, we begin the process of aging.

Not at 50.

Not at retirement.

Not when the mirror begins to reflect change.

From the very beginning.

Aging is movement.

Aging is development.

Aging is accumulation—of experiences, relationships, lessons, losses, and growth.

It is the thread that runs through every stage of life:

- The curiosity of childhood

- The urgency of adolescence

- The striving of adulthood

- The reflection of latter years

Each phase feels different.

But the process?

The process is shared.

And yet, despite this shared journey, we often treat aging as something isolating—something to resist, deny, or fear.

Insight

If aging is universal, then so is the opportunity for connection.

Every person you meet is navigating time.

Every person you encounter is carrying a past, managing a present, and anticipating a future.

Aging is not just biological—it is psychological, emotional, relational, and spiritual.

When we begin to see aging not as decline, but as continuity, something shifts.

Takeaway

Aging is the greatest equalizer.

It does not discriminate.

It does not exclude.

It does not pause.

And because of that, it offers us something extraordinary: A built-in, lifelong connection to every other human being.

So the question is not:

“Am I aging?”

The question is:

“How am I choosing to age—and how am I connecting through that experience?”

AgeLoudly!*: Age Like It Matters…..Because It Does!

___________

AgeLoudly! a philosophy of thought and action that applies at every stage of life and development.  AgeLoudly! is about living intentionally, visibly, and with purpose. It is the belief that each stage of life presents an opportunity to grow, to contribute, and to refine the person we are becoming. When individuals adopt an AgeLoudly! mindset, they begin to see their experiences — both successes and failures — as material for growth rather than evidence of limitation. This shift can be profoundly empowering. It reframes challenges as invitations, transitions as opportunities, and life itself as a process of continued expansion rather than decline.                                   “AgeLoudly!: Age Like it Matters….Because it Does!”.
